WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL MONTREAL

Wisdom Teeth Removal
We take great pride in the way we treat patients who require wisdom teeth extraction. Although the Canadian and American Associations of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (CAOMS & AAOMS) consider the best time for removal of impacted and unerupted teeth to occur between the ages of 15 and 25, wisdom teeth removal is an important part of preventive dentistry at any age. Waiting for impacted and unerupted teeth to cause pain or complex clinical complications results only in more extensive and costly treatment. Our patients report excellent recovery rates following tooth removal.
What are wisdom teeth?
Third molars, better known as “wisdom teeth”, are the third set of teeth, usually the last teeth in the back of the mouth, that in some people don’t have enough space to come out completely and can stay partially or completely in bone. They are also very often in inappropriate positions which can cause problems such as difficulty with oral hygiene, caries, periodontal problems, pain, and infections.
Why should you have your wisdom teeth removed?
Third molars which are impacted (unable to erupt normally) can interfere with adjacent teeth and other facial structures. For example, a wisdom tooth has the potential of pushing on the roots of the adjacent tooth, often causing significant problems. They can also be the cause of abscesses, gum infections (pericoronitis), as well as other lesions such as cysts.
When should you have your wisdom teeth removed?
Wisdom teeth typically start erupting around age 16. When a third molar has been identified as potentially problematic, it is best to have it removed sooner rather than later. This timing serves two main purposes. Firstly, we want to make sure the roots are not fully formed to minimize any damage to the sinuses or the inferior alveolar nerve. Secondly, younger patients tend to recuperate more easily and at a faster rate.
